Board Names Performing Arts Center in Honor of Veteran Music Educator
At the regular monthly Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, April 13, 2026, Board President T.J. Shafer announced the decision to name the school's performing arts center the Gary D. Fort Center for the Performing Arts, honoring the distinguished music educator's remarkable career and contributions. Mr. Fort has dedicated seven years to New Diana and brings 47 years of total classroom experience to the district. Under his leadership, the band program has achieved extraordinary success such as; multiple UIL Sweepstakes awards and top ratings across various competition levels, appearances at UIL Military Marching Band competitions, earning gold and bronze medals at state championships, and nineteen students have been selected for the Texas Music Educators Association All-State Band during his tenure.
The timing of this honor is particularly meaningful, as the band hall is currently undergoing an extensive renovation and expansion as part of the $28 million bond package approved by voters in 2024. The project will add approximately 2,000 square feet to the existing facility, be completed by August 2026, and allow Mr. Fort to teach in the building bearing his name.
Mr. Fort plans to continue teaching until he reaches the 50-year milestone in his career, ensuring that future generations of New Diana students will benefit from his expertise and dedication to music .

Instructional Time Update Due to Weather Closure

Dear NDISD Families,

We wanted to share a quick update regarding our weather closure at the end of January.

The state has approved a waiver for one of those days; however, we are still required to make up a portion of missed instructional time. To do this in a way that minimizes disruption for our students and families, we will make a small adjustment to our daily schedule rather than adding an extra school day.

Here’s what to expect:

Beginning Monday, April 6th, the school day will be extended by 3 minutes, with dismissal at 4:08 p.m. This schedule will continue through the last day of school.

Additionally, the last day of school (May 21st) will be a full day, with dismissal at 4:08 p.m. instead of 1:00 p.m.

We chose this approach to keep our calendar intact while making the smallest possible impact on your daily routines.
Thank you for your continued support and flexibility. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

New Diana ISD Parents & Guardians,

The New Diana ISD is canceling classes on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, out of an abundance of caution, due to ice still being present on various rural area roads, a predicted deep freeze overnight, and a possible winter fog in the morning. The District Administration will continue to monitor weather conditions. Please be safe and warm.

“We are incredibly proud of the effort and imagination these young artists poured into this project,” said Johnson. “The Wyland Challenge encourages students nationwide to think deeply about environmental stewardship, and our students rose to the occasion with passion and creativity.”

In addition to the mural, five students submitted individual artworks for consideration in the national competition and potential scholarships:
Tyler McCoy, Christopher Bariteau, Mercy Bariteau, Emerie Castillo Rodriguez, and Kaidon Jeffery.
As part of the supporting requirements for the challenge, Ezekiel Harding authored a thoughtful conservation essay, demonstrating the academic and environmental commitment of the program.

The following students contributed to the mural and challenge project:
Tyler McCoy, Lola Ashcraft, Kamryn Nicholson, Christopher Bariteau, Emerie Castillo-Rodriguez, Mercy Bariteau, Kaidon Jeffery, Jaxon Shillings, Gracie Simon, Riley Doss, Addilyn Valle, Piper Radford, Addison Radford, and Ezekiel Harding.

The completed mural has been submitted to the Wyland Foundation’s national competition, where students across the country are recognized for outstanding artistic achievement and environmental awareness.

The New Diana ISD community is invited to view and celebrate this exceptional student work, which stands as a testament to the power of art education and the talent of the New Diana High School Art Program.
